We are prone to fortification, domination, or accommodation.
Big Idea: Our salvation is a call to live as exiles as we bless the world.
If you haven’t noticed by now—over the past few years I’ve pushed back on the notion that our Christian faith exists simply that so that we can go to heaven when we die. Of course salvation is not less than that—but it is so—so much more. It’s a necessary critique because we tend view our salvation solely in terms of personal atonement. And I believe personal atonement—being made right with God is a deep longing humans have whether they know it for not, but if the story stops there, it ceases to be compelling for a lot of people because there’s this great big world around us that is both beautiful and broken and needs grace. And it leaves us asking—what if there’s a bigger story? In other words, what is our salvation actually for besides just the assurance we’ll go to heaven when we die?
